Description: Dated ca. 1930-1943, this photograph shows a recently constructed bridge at New Comerstown, Ohio, over the Tuscarawas River. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the route of the Ohio and Erie Canal in Tuscarawas and Coshocton Counties between stations 3410 and 3504. The town of Newcomerstown, bridges, mills, railroads, stations, locks, and other landmarks along the route are also noted. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Description: This photograph shows the Cy Young Memorial in Newcomerstown. The monument was erected in 1955 adjacent to Cy Young Park, where Young threw out the first pitch on June 24, 1953. The photograph measures 2.75" x 2.75" (6.99 x 6.99 cm). Denton T. "Cy" Young (1867-1955), a native of Gilmore, Ohio, began his baseball career with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890. He later played for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Boston Americans, the Boston Pilgrims, the Boston Red Sox, the Cleveland Naps (later called the Indians), and the Boston Braves. On May 5, 1904 Young pitched the first no-hitter in American League history in a game against the Philadelphia Athletics. Young won 511 games in his career, and had 15 seasons of 20 wins or more. He pitched and won two games in the first modern World Series. In 1937 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Cy Young Award, given to outstanding pitchers in the American and National Leagues, is named in his honor. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a bookplate of William C. Mills (1860-1928). Mills developed an avocational interest in archaeology while making a living as a pharmacist in small towns in Ohio and Kansas from 1885 to 1897. He earned B.S. (1898) and M.S. (1902) degrees from The Ohio State University. Having served as secretary of a local archaeological society (1888-1890) in Newcomerstown, Ohio, he became curator (1898-1921) and then director (1921-1928) of the Museum of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society at Columbus. The large scroll-like piece represents a large copper plate, the only example found in the mounds at that time. In 1902 Mills, then the Society's curator, excavated the Adena Mound (Chillicothe). The center piece is the Adena Mound Effigy Pipe, one of the finest examples of sculpture work found in any mound in the United States. The whole bookplate includes drawings of objects representing explorations that Mills made. At the bottom of the main illustration are two groups of initials: "I.E.F. Del (left corner) and "A.N.M. This photographic montage, presumably made for possible use in The Ohio Guide, is made up of Tuscarawas County newspaper mastheads, headlines and miscellaneous articles and photographs, most of which are dated around December 7, 1938. Newspaper mastheads that appear in the photograph include: Dennison Daily Paragraph, The Daily Times, The Evening Chronicle (Uhrichsville), The Budget, Strasburg Record, The Daily Reporter, Newcomerstown News. Headlines that appear include: "Thomas Kemp", "Officers Installed On Tuesday Evening", "Christmas Play Sunday Dec. 18", "Wardell - Ricker Nuptials", "Cooking Show Opens Friday For Two Days", "Creek Project Comes to Life After Parley", and "Tax Protest Spreads as Town Meet Nears". From 1935 to 1942, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), through its Federal Writers' Project created The American Guide Series, which included forty-eight state guides, as well as supplemental guides for large cities, etc. The state guides are divided into three sections. In the first section are general essays about the state on things such as agriculture, culture, history, industry, religion, etc. The second section contains an overview of the various cities and towns around the state, as well as enumerating various points of interest. The last section is dedicated to various tours around the state. The tourist is taken from city to city, with turn by turn directions, and descriptions of what can be seen along the way. While much of the country has grown and changed since the guides were written, it is surprising how much remains, and sometimes more surprising what has been lost. View on Ohio Memory.
